August 10, 2010

The end of the school year always brings with it some farewells and transitions.  At the end of the 2009-2011 school year we will be saying goodbye to retiring staff members LeAnn Karmann, Fred Hess, and Leigh Metcalf.  I want to personally thank Fred, LeAnn, and Leigh for their commitment and dedication to our school district.  You will each be greatly missed!

The middle of May will usher in the end of the first year of the 1 to 1 laptop initiative.  Students are reminded that the check-in of laptops will take place at the end of the school year.  We will be issuing check-in sheets to each student who has a laptop and it is important that students understand that they will need to go through the check-in process in order to be signed out of school at the end of the year.  It is a good time to begin thinking about saving important material off of your laptop, transferring your files, and cleaning out anything off of your computers storage that you may not need.

Last year at this time I was talking about the implementation of the Nebraska State Reading Test.  During the month of April the reading test window was opened and HPC students in grades 3-8 and 11 did in fact take the state reading test for the first time. Our students have had the opportunity to take an online practice test this fall and I feel that we had a positive response from our students and staff regarding their first experiences taking the online reading test. Within the next 3 years the Reading test will be joined by the new state Math and Science tests as well.

Once again, the summer months in a school building are a time of transition and change.  This year the high school Science classroom will be getting a major facelift as practically everything that is currently in the room will be removed and replaced with new and updated models.  I am looking forward to seeing this project completed and am certain that the original science lab have served its purpose during the 50 years that the high school building has been used by students.  In addition, I would like to thank the board of education for their support in giving the go-ahead with this project.  It is greatly appreciated!

I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.  It is always nice to take time to recharge our batteries and soon the anticipation of a new school year will be upon us.  See you in August!
